It's one of the first questions you'll face when planning an exhibition: should you go modular or custom? The answer depends on your budget, how often you exhibit, and what impression you want to make. Let's break it down properly.
What is a modular booth?
A modular exhibition booth is built from a system of pre-engineered, reusable components — panels, frames, counters, and connectors — that can be assembled in different configurations. Think of it like high-quality, branded Lego.
Modular systems have come a long way. A well-designed modular stand with quality graphics and lighting looks genuinely impressive — and most visitors can't tell the difference between modular and custom from the aisle.
Modular works best when:
- You have a limited budget
- You exhibit at shows with different floor plan sizes
- You want a quick turnaround
- You're new to exhibiting and want to start smart
What is a custom booth?
A custom exhibition booth is designed and built from scratch, specifically for your brand. There are no off-the-shelf components — every element is created to your brief, from the structural form to the materials, lighting, and finishes.
Custom stands are what you see at the big industry shows — the double-storey structures, the immersive brand environments, the booths you photograph and post about. They're a significant investment, but they're also genuinely unforgettable.
Custom works best when:
- You have a large or complex floor space
- Brand impact is a top priority
- You exhibit regularly and want to amortise the cost across multiple shows
- You want total creative freedom
What about semi-modular?
Semi-modular is the middle ground — and for many brands, it's the sweet spot. You get a modular structural system (which keeps costs down) with custom-designed elements layered on top: a bespoke reception counter, a feature wall with unique materials, custom lighting, or a branded overhead structure.
The result looks significantly more premium than a standard modular booth, at a fraction of the full custom cost.
The reuse factor
Whichever type you choose, all three can be stored and reinstalled across multiple events — which is the key to making your booth investment work harder over time. The cost-per-show drops dramatically when you stop building new every time.
So which should you choose?
- Tight budget or first show? Start with modular. Get on the floor, learn what works, and upgrade later.
- Established brand, mid-range budget? Semi-modular gives you a premium look without the full custom price.
- Major show, strong brand, bigger budget? Go custom and make a real statement.
