What Is a Shell Scheme Stand? (And How to Make Yours Stand Out)

If you've just booked your first exhibition space, chances are the organiser has offered you something called a "shell scheme." It's the default option at most Australian trade shows, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. So let's cover what you're actually getting, what the rules are, and how to avoid looking like the forty identical booths either side of you.

What you actually get

A shell scheme is the pre-built booth structure the organiser provides. White or grey walls (usually 2.4m high), a fascia board across the front with your company name printed on it, and often a spotlight or two plus a single power point. The most common size in Australia is 3m x 3m, though 3m x 2m and larger configurations exist.

It sounds convenient, and it is. You don't need to build walls, you don't need to submit structural drawings, and you can technically turn up with nothing more than a pull-up banner and a table. That's exactly the problem.

Why shell schemes all look the same

Walk any exhibition hall and you'll see it. Row after row of white booths with a printed name board, a trestle table, and a lonely banner in the corner. Visitors' eyes glaze over. The shell scheme isn't bad, it's just neutral, and neutral is invisible in a hall with hundreds of exhibitors fighting for attention.

The exhibitors who stand out treat the shell as a blank canvas rather than a finished booth.

The rules you need to know

Before you plan anything, check your exhibitor manual, because shell schemes come with restrictions.

You generally can't drill, screw, nail, paint, or glue anything to the walls. Damage charges are real and they're not cheap. Most systems accept hook-and-loop tape, and some use panels that clip into the frame. Anything heavy usually needs to be free-standing.

You usually can't build above the 2.4m wall height without organiser approval, and anything visible above the walls from neighbouring booths may need to be finished on both sides.

Your fascia board typically displays your name in a standard font. Some organisers let you remove or rebrand it, some don't. Ask.

How to make a shell scheme stand out

Cover the walls. This is the single biggest upgrade you can make. A tension fabric wall or fabric popup sized to fit inside the shell turns three white panels into a seamless, full colour branded backdrop. Because these are free-standing, they don't touch the shell walls at all, so there's nothing to get approved and nothing to be charged for.

Add light. Shell scheme spotlights are an afterthought. A backlit fabric lightbox or illuminated counter instantly separates you from neighbours relying on the house lighting, especially in dimmer halls.

Swap the trestle table for a branded counter. A trestle table with a tablecloth says market stall. A proper counter with printed graphics says business. It also gives you hidden storage, which keeps the booth tidy all day.

Think in layers. Backdrop at the rear, counter at the front edge, and one hero element at eye level, whether that's a lightbox, a product display or a screen. Keep the floor space open so people can step in without feeling trapped.

Don't forget the floor. Most shell schemes sit on bare venue carpet. Even a simple branded or coloured floor tile set changes how finished the space feels.

The budget reality

Here's the good part. Dressing a shell scheme well costs a fraction of a custom build. A fabric backdrop, a branded counter and decent lighting can transform a 3x3 space, and because everything is modular, it packs into a few carry bags and gets reused at every show you do afterwards. Your cost per show drops every time you exhibit.

Wrapping up

A shell scheme is a starting point, not a booth. The exhibitors who win in shell scheme rows are the ones who cover the white walls, control their own lighting, and give visitors one clear thing to look at. None of that requires a custom build. It just requires deciding you won't look like everyone else.
